Facsimile, or fax as it is usually known, is a communications method in which text and graphic materials may be transmitted over a telephone. It was invented in 1940’s, but after many years, the fax has gained widespread popularity. Fax terminals may be likened to a photocopying machine which can reproduce an exact copy of the original document. The only difference is that a fax has a telephone pad.

Most fax machines are programmed to perform an easy transmission like redialing system, delayed transmission (according to the time you may want the document to be transmitted), clear copy impressions, abbreviated fax numbers, and more. You may also use the telephone of the fax machines for voice calls.

How the fax works:

Place the document, upside down, on the sending tray of the fax terminal.

Using keypad on the terminal (or the attached telephone handset), enter the telephone number you wish to dial. Keep in mind that international calls would require country code and area code, while for local calls; you simply dial the fax number of the called party.

If the telephone connection cannot be established, the dialing procedure must be repeated. Reasons for failure to establish connection include busy telephone / cable lines, a busy receiving fax terminal, or the receiving terminal is temporarily out of order.

When the phone connection has been established, press the “send” key on the fax terminal after the “beep” tones.

If the telephone connection has been interrupted before the fax transmission has been completed, the dialing procedure must be repeated then resend the interrupted page.

When the transmission is completed, the Activity Report or transmission slip will automatically be printed. The charges in transmitting documents are based on actual minutes consumed while transmitting the document. The only disadvantage is that every interrupted calls and retransmissions would mean additional cost – you still have to pay the garbled messages.

Some fax machines have key functions like copy, speed / abbreviated dialing, redialing, telephone / fax changeover, voice communications / talk function, confidential communication, relay broadcasting, scanning, and many more.

With the many high technology gadgets/apparatus that are coming out, it is no doubt that facsimile is still useful nowadays.

Gadgets and gizmos are good investments to make these days, not only for keeping in step with the times but also in touch with friends. Laptops really do make work easier if you need to take it with you wherever you go. This is especially true for sales people who like to impress prospects with CD presentations instead of the usual clear book presentations. PDAs (Personal Digital Assistant) are effective for keeping track of schedules and documents. Imagine yourself meeting a headhunter, he asks for your resume, and you beam it from your Palm to his in seconds. Worth it? Depends on your needs, but the number of Palm poking people is increasing steadily.

Here are some considerations in choosing / buying your gadget:

Buy your gadget in cash. You will most likely to get it cheaper than if you use a credit card. If you do, examine your cash flow first and determine if you can pay the whole thing right away once you are billed. If you know from the start that you can’t pay it all off as soon as it’s due, you may be better off programming your payments in installments, rather than “revolving” on your credit card (or paying only the minimum amount due, and paying a hefty interest on the unpaid amount). This is because credit card companies charge “revolvers” interest from day 1 even for new purchases that are paid right once the bill becomes due – that means you’ll be paying interest even on items that have nothing to do with the appliance you just purchased!

If you want to pay in installments, use a credit card with a smaller factor rate to save on interest payments. Choose 12-month terms, unless the store offers 0% interest for shorter terms. Also, most merchants are willing to waive their credit card surcharge if you buy things on installment.

Research on the different brands and models of the gadget you’re eyeing. You may end up paying for some high-tech features that you won’t be needing or ever using.

Canvas several stores and even several branches of the same appliance chain. With big-ticket items, a small 1% mark-up on prices can spell hundreds in extra cost.

Try to wait for installment fairs or bazaars where dealers give goods on installment without interest.

Apple’s new iOS 5 is, well, nothing short of spectacular. With over 200 new features, Apple has once again raised the technological bar another notch and showed the world (and its competitors) who is boss. Notification Center, a revamped messaging service, Newsstand, Reminders, Twitter app, and all new cutting edge accessibility features are just a drop in the bucket of what you can expect with this new OS.

You get plenty of notifications throughout the day. With new email, friend requests, texts, and messages of all sorts. Notification Center keeps track of your busy life. With your choice of what you want to see, Notification Center keeps track of new alerts in one easy location. At the top of the screen, new alerts briefly appear then disappear so you’re not distracted with what you are doing or simply swipe down from the top of any screen to see this useful new app.

With iMessage, you can send unlimited text messages to or from an iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad using those devices with Wi-Fi or 3G. Delivery receipts help you keep track of messages. A small thought bubble shows you when someone is typing. There is also secure encryption for your text messages.

Organize all of your newspaper and magazine app subscriptions in one place. Newsstand is just the app to keep you on top of the latest fashions, newest technologies, and world news. Newsstand resembles the shelves of a news stand and as new subscriptions arrive, the covers change to reflect the new issues. New purchases are automatically placed in the folder and you receive an alert.

Reminders is the ultimate to-do list! Organize your daily life with lists of things you want to accomplish throughout your day. Let’s say you need to go to the grocery store to get Fluffy some food. Since Reminders can be based on due dates or location, you will be alerted as soon as you drive into the grocery store parking lot. Very cool. A clean, smart looking interface with calendars and ordered lists will help keep you on top of your day.

Tweeting from your iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad is now even easier. After going to Settings and signing in once, directly tweet from YouTube, Safari, Maps, Camera, or Photos. When you mention or @reply, Contacts will automatically apply your friends profile pictures and usernames. It’s sweet to Tweet.

IOS 5 includes innovative Accessibility technology such as support for Bluetooth Braille displays, custom LED flash and vibration settings for incoming calls, and improved VoiceOver technology with customized element labeling.

There are way too many new features to list here; over 200 in fact. There’s one thing for sure, Apple’s new iOS 5 makes using your iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad one of life’s simple pleasures.

I have been an iPhone user from the very beginning. While I haven’t owned each model, I am a big supporter of the OS. There are plenty of Android fans out there, and I get it. Android is a decent mobile OS, but for my money, iOS takes the cake. While I am a fan of open source environments, I cannot get past the fact that Apple’s iOS closed environment just works. So with that being said, here are my favorite iOS apps.

1Password: This is a must have for 1Password desktop owners. It is the perfect password manager that majors on ease of use and good user interface. It’s even better with Dropbox sync. I no longer have to manually sync my app to the desktop version.

Dropbox: Speaking of Dropbox, this app is another must have. It is very easy to upload files for backup purposes, and the app can open most files you put in it.

USAA: The best bank in the country has the best financial app in the App Store. It is an absolute breeze to use, and may be my most used app.

Vimeo: Youtube is admittedly larger and more popular. However Vimeo is a better choice for video professionals, because of the high quality streams that come from them. Their app is similarly great, and has a major bonus – video editing. In many ways, it is easier than Apple’s iMovie app.

Alien Blue: Reddit fans out there, this is the app you should be using on your iOS device. I actually prefer interacting with Reddit with Alien Blue than on the website itself.

Twitter: Twitter’s native iOS app is a great way to interact with the service with your iPhone or iPad. It incorporates shortcuts that make hashtags, pictures and responses exceedingly simple.

These are just a few of my favorites. What are yours?

T-Mobile has recently decided to crown themselves a 4G data provider, despite not hitting the official benchmarks for 4G. Here is the commercial where they try to build on that, and take a shot at the iPhone:

I must admit, it takes some chutzpah to throw yourself out there like that. It also is a little foolish, because the ad is full of misleading stats. T-Mobile is not an actual 4G network. Google “The 4G Forgery” and you’ll see what a sham the use of the word is anyway. Also, the shot about being tethered to WiFi vs. 4G is ridiculous. There are more WiFi hotspots than 4G coverage in this country anyway.

T-Mobile needs to go back to the drawing board. Also, try using actual facts instead of misleading statements.

E-Ink technology first came to the market with Amazon’s Kindle device. The biggest issue with the Kindle so far has been the lack of a color option. Chinese company Hanvon has now released a color version of E-Ink that is debuting in it’s new e-book reader.

The biggest problem with LCD readers has been the strain on the eyes from the backlit screen. E-Ink screens eliminated that issue by creating a look that more closely resembled the printed page. Until now, there have only been monochromatic versions of the technology. However, don’t expect a look similar to the iPhone’s retina display. The colors have been described as closely resembling a color photo in a newspaper. It also can’t yet handle video, so no YouTube.

The technology will continue to come along, and we’ll see continued development. The real question is, can companies find a way to marry the best of E-Ink and backlit display technologies? We’ll see.

Monday, Windows Phone 7 will hit the market in an attempt by Microsoft to be relevant in the mobile market. This won’t be easy for them, and they have never been great introducing groundbreaking competition (See Zune and Kin). My question is whether they’ve learned to innovate a bit.

To some extent, they have. From what I have read about Windows Phone 7, Microsoft has added some neat features, including a dedicated camera button. This should make it easier to quickly capture fleeting moments. Microsoft is also asserting more control via minimum hardware requirements. Different user experiences have long been the problem for Windows devices, and these requirements should give a more consistent experience across the line.

It’s not clear if anyone will buy into what Microsoft is doing, but I do think they are headed in the right direction. The initial flaws, like no copy and paste, can be fixed in subsequent OS updates. If they build on this start, they may become a decent player in the mobile market.

Home video these days is a misnomer. The video we shoot ourselves is better termed “personal video” since we now are able to shoot video anywhere we go with our cell phones. I shot video of my dog at the dog park this past weekend. I used my iPhone 4 to take the video, and iMovie for iPhone to edit it. My computer never needed to enter the equation.

We are now able to document our lives and the world around us with amazing ease. The cameras being put into phones now can shoot up to 720p HD video. When on a family vacation, you no longer need to carry around a camera bag. You won’t have to bring your computer in order edit and upload the video to YouTube.

Video camera manufacturers are going to need to give a compelling reason to get people to buy video cameras. Without one, I could see people ditching their old video devices for the ease of shooting on their cell phone.

I’ve been reading more information about the new, upcoming Mac App Store. As with the iOS App Store, Apple will be exerting much control. So, while developers will enjoy the massive audience boost the App Store will give them, they will also have to deal with Apple’s notoriously tight controls.

I do find this new way to distribute software downright revolutionary. It’s a fantastic way to discover terrific new software. Sites like MacUpdate have been my go-to place to find new software in the past. In fact, that’s how I discovered my favorite FTP client, Forklift. However, MacUpdate is not integrated with the operating system like the App Store will be.

Despite all of the positives, it will be hard to get past the large chunk of the pie Apple takes for using it’s App Stores. With an iOS device, there is no other choice. With a Mac, many developers may choose to stay on their own, thus maintaining control.

Apple has announced a new update to Mac OS X, version 10.7. Going with the familiar cat-themed names, it will be called Lion. The operating system update was just the tip of the iceberg, however. The MacBook Air, iLife Suite, FaceTime for Mac and a new Mac App Store were big announcements yesterday.

I think the Mac App Store is the most intriguing announcement that was made. The Mac developer community has always been vibrant, and this should take that to a whole new level. Users will have one central place to find software for their Mac. This should enhance the user experience, as more and more people are getting accustomed to finding their applications via “App Stores”.

There is quite a bit more information about the Apple announcements yesterday, and Apple has even posted a video of the press event online. I look forward to the release of these new products.
